A Meta-Synthesis of the Barriers and Facilitators for Personal Informatics Systems

Personal informatics (PI) systems are designed for diverse users in the real world. Even when these usable, people encounter barriers while engaging with them ways designers cannot anticipate, which impacts system's effectiveness. Although PI literature extensively reports such barriers, volume of this information can be overwhelming. Researchers and practitioners often find themselves repeatedly addressing same challenges since sifting through enormous knowledge looking relevant insights is infeasible. We contribute to alleviating issue by conducting a meta-synthesis categorizing people's facilitators engagement into eight themes. Based on synthesized knowledge, we discuss specific generalizable paths further investigations. This synthesis serve as an index identify pertinent each application domain possibly from one that might apply different domain. Finally, ensure sustainability syntheses, propose Design Statements (DS) block research articles.
